How to hydrate your skin Pre and Post Air Travel with the Right Foods

It’s officially high summer and people are taking to the skies for vacation and business travel. You know the drill. You’re given a bag of salty pretzels or peanuts, the drink cart makes a couple of rounds and before you know it it’s wheels down. You’re regretting not drinking more water during the flight and your skin feels tight and dry. However, drinking water on a longer flight is a double-edged sword, if you don’t your entire epidermis dries up; if you do your lower body can retain the liquid. So how can you fly without the ankle swell or the skin dehydration?

Here are some tips from Dr. Christopher Calapai DO, an anti-aging and stem cell expert and long time health advisor to the New York Rangers hockey team, tells us how to fight the dryness with foods.

  1. Watermelon

“Watermelon is one of the most hydrating foods there are,” says Dr. Calapai “Its a great alternative to plane snacks which have large amounts of sodium, which in turn make you more dehydrated.” Pack big thick slices in a large plastic baggie and take them in your handbag, they won’t be taken away at TSA and will help you avoid the salty peanuts.

  1. Cucumbers

“Cucumbers are about 96 percent water,” says Calapai “They also contain no saturated fat or cholesterol and are high in Vitamin B6 which helps in the production of serotonin which is the brain chemical that controls mood.” You can slice them or cube them and also bring them along in a baggie or small container. Try making small cucumber-watermelon bites, they are pretty delicious!

  1. Strawberries

When the airplane cookies come around say no thanks and reach for some strawberries instead! “Strawberries have the highest water content of any berry, 92 percent to be exact,” shares Calapai “You can enjoy the tart-sweet flavor without consuming too much sugar.”

  1. All in one salad

If you’re the type that needs an actual meal to feel satisfied bring along a salad. Add tomatoes, juicy chicken, plenty of lettuce and goat cheese. Lettuce is 96 percent water and tomatoes are 94 percent water. Go easy on the salt when seasoning your chicken and grill it or steam it instead of frying it to retain moisture. Make up for flavor and texture with some goat cheese! All the ingredients stay good at room temperature most of the day and there’s no heating required when it’s time for lunch/dinner.

  1. Coconut Water

Ok so you can’t totally avoid drinking liquids! “Coconut water is low in calories and high in naturally occurring hydration replenishing electrolytes, which regular water does not contain. It’s a better option than sports drinks which have artificial flavors and more calories,” advises Dr. Calapai. After you’re past security grab a bottle of coconut water from any of the airport mini-marts.

Dr. Christopher Calapai, D.O. is an Osteopathic Physician board certified in family medicine, and anti-aging medicine. GemWater with VitaJuwel

My fascination with rocks and crystals began in my rural Georgia backyard. As a young child, it served as a vast and magical land where Native American tribes had once lived. I loved spending many summer afternoons digging into the earth and if I was lucky finding very old carved crystal arrowheads. My best friend, Lisa and I spent school recess time “looking for rocks”. We would find and compare our rocks, clean and treasure them. There was magic in those rocks!

I’ve discovered a new a way to blend my passion for gemstones and crystals with the healthy habit of staying hydrated! I recently attended a Reiki training with the renowned, Linda Bertaut, to bring another level of healing to my facial clients.  She prepared “GemStone Mojitos” for our class. I’ve never been one to turn down a mojito, believe me and although these had no alcohol, they most definitely were full of creativity, vitality and life and the colorful glass pitcher was intoxicatingly beautiful to behold on the dining room table.  She expertly combined fresh sliced fruits, mint and of course big beautiful gemstones – this delicious elixir made me thirsty for more….

I had the pleasure to meet with Jan Eisen, of VitaJuwel recently. He graciously invited me to his U.S. headquarters to do a GemWater tasting. VitaJuwel has been in the U.S. a couple of years and is a family owned and created company that makes handcrafted, elegant and the most insanely gorgeous gemstone water vials and accoutrements you will ever find – they are serious about their artisan-craft and have the patents to prove it.

photo-128

Jan and I did a tasting with several different gemstone blends and I noticed the subtle way the gemstone infused waters tasted different – softer, smoother, and even sweeter depending on the blend. Jan is so full of knowledge and passion for this subject, that I could have talked to him for hours and we did. He educated me on the ancient tradition of vitalizing water with the usage of gems. In ancient times Greek doctors cured ailments with gemstones and minerals. German scientists have proven that water becomes more alkaline and the oxygen content increases with VitaJuwel gem vials. The regular drinking water reaches a quality level otherwise only found in natural spring water when the gemstone vials are used. VitaJuwel only uses fairly-traded, conflict-free gems and lead-free Bohemian glass designed by glass artists in the European Union. VitaJuwel makes making gem water a snap and very efficient. Jan’s family creates all of their products and they are tested on their friends around the globe. They have combined their passion and creativity with true German ingenuity.

Water is the essence of life and arguably you might even say the fountain of youth. We are made of 65% water and it’s essential for life. Dr. Masaru Emoto, who sadly recently passed away, was the Scientist and author of the New York Times bestseller, “The Hidden Messages in Water”. Dr. Emoto’s research not only revealed that water has memory but that it can be improved by external influences such as gems. In microscopic photos you can see how the water crystals are positively influenced by the gems. This revolutionary research is what inspired VitaJuwel to create the gem vials. This amazing doctor and scientist also partnered with VitaJuwel to create a set of 3 exclusive gem vials – “EmotoCrystals” which are now available to the public and a portion of sales goes to Dr. Emoto’s foundation “Emoto Peace Project”. I’m very honored to have the Carnelian – Halite salt vial! Carnelian was called the “Stone of Life” in ancient Egypt and Halite “Salt of Kings. There are several different vials and you can even customize your own.

Numerous spa owners use the gem water blends as an essential part of their beauty treatments as they know SPA (Sanus Per Aquam) means “Health through water” You can find VitaJuwel at many exclusive and high-end resort and day spas throughout the world.

There’s even a VitaJuwel Vino product that sommeliers are using to rediscover the ancient tradition of using amethysts which makes for a smoother wine. I’m hooked on this one and enjoy the looks and questions I get when I take this to my local wine bars.

Saving the environment one “Via” at a time. VitaJuwel has recently created a new portable water bottle called the Via. This lead-free glass bottle has two openings with an exchangeable “gem pod” where the gems are enclosed. It’s suitable for cold and hot liquids (love this for my tea!) and available in 17 different blends. Did you know that 1,500 plastic bottles are used per second in the U.S.?  80% of them are not recycled and they are made of petroleum. I would rather go thirsty than drink from a petroleum based plastic water for the simple fact that I don’t like the taste and you don’t know if that bottle may have been in the sun or a hot truck as it was shipped and what chemicals have made their way into the water as they leach from the heated plastic.  Using a refillable glass bottle like the Via is a great way to make a small contribution to save the environment, not to mention your health and look good doing it! Jewelry for your water! Who would have thought?!?!!?

Drink Your Way to Healthy Skin with Collagen Supplementation!

photo-6

Here’s a bit of bad news, after age 25, collagen levels in the body start to decline at a rate of  1 to 1.5% a year.  The good news is you can help keep your skin plump and increase your collagen and even hyaluronic acid levels with the right supplements. I’ve been hearing the buzz about these types of supplements for a while. Collagen supplementation is extremely popular and mainstream in Asian countries – where they’re serious about their beauty regimens and skincare. We all witnessed and indulged in the BB/CC cream frenzy that started in Asia and this will be huge here as well.

I’m a business consultant for a skincare/medical spa distributor and this is a brand I represent to my medical accounts.  I had advanced training on the formulations and technology of this company, which was founded by a scientist and formulated with a doctor. Since I saw so many success stories, I had to try this for myself. I started taking the supplement about a month ago and I’m excited to see the changes to my hair, skin, nails and even a nagging injury to my ankle I got on a hiking trail a couple of months ago.  Collagen supplementation is also very good for the connective tissue in the body since it’s comprised of collagen.  It’s important to note, these types of supplements don’t deliver instant results – so I’m being patient (and consistent!)  and just know from the clinical studies and the glowing reviews of those around me that this works. It makes sense to me as an Esthetician and Nutritionist since everything we ingest- good or bad- effects our skin’s integrity and health.  The right internal supplements can be just as important as your topical treatments, and will definitely be a welcome addition to a comprehensive approach to taking care of your skin.

The product I’m using is called Advanced Connective Tissue Formula, by Collagen MD. What I really like about this is that it’s a pharmaceutical grade hydrolyzed collagen type I and III.  It’s also sugar free, doesn’t have a taste, and it’s free of sugar, soy, dairy, preservatives and gluten.  Some high-end spas are using this formula to make their own signature elixir for their clients to indulge in on their visits. I have been mixing up a drink in the morning with coconut water, and any type of fresh organic berries I have on hand. When I’m in a big hurry I just add a couple scoops of the powder to my water bottle – shake it up and drink it right away. It’s also a great way to boost your water intake as well. What’s important to note is that you don’t want to take the supplement with a protein since it has to be the sole source of protein at the time you ingest it for it to assimilate properly. For the first two weeks I would only put 1 scoop in my drink and after a couple of weeks I increased it to the recommended 2 scoops. There is a very small percentage of the population (4%) that are sensitive to taking collagen supplements so it’s very unlikely you would have any issues especially since Collagen MD is free of extra ingredients you don’t need.

This supplement also contains Vitamin C, which is needed by the body to produce collagen. It also contains one of my favorite skincare ingredients which is also naturally occurring in our skin, Hyaluronic Acid, also known as, “Nature’s Moisturizer”. Hyaluronic acid is a glycosaminoglycan that gives our skin a supple, hydrated appearance, and provides the body with lubrication.  It also contains folic acid, biotin and B12 – necessary for skin health and collagen synthesis.  What’s also important to me to note, is that this is a very “clean” supplement.  I always read labels and make sure the supplements I’m taking don’t contain fillers, sugar and preservatives. Collagen MD is manufactured in the U.S. and has quality ingredients without any cheap filler ingredients you don’t want.

18 Tips for an Effective Juice Cleanse

If you are going to take the time,  energy and expense to do a juice cleanse you want results!!

I started doing juice cleanses many years ago- one of my coworkers came back from vacation with a radiant glow to her skin and a fit and trim body. She was always gorgeous but she was shining like a light had been turned on inside of her. She shared her secret spot in Palm desert and soon I was sipping juice and trading colon therapy session stories with
Bianca Jagger (Mick’s ex-wife) who was in the room next to me and who actually may have saved my life that week – she awakened me when the water heater outside the back of our shared building had overheated in the 110 degree heat and caught our building began to burst into flames!  Hey Bianca if your reading this thank you! This place was a low key juicing getaway for famous actresses and supermodels so of course I fit right in – haha. I survived the week quite well and dropped 10 lbs exactly where I needed to – took breaththerapy classes, sat in a special vortex triangle, meditated, hung upside down, experienced rolfing and it was life changing  and I felt so good. I was so inspired by cleanses and all of the amazing things I learned that I decided to become a Holistic Nutritionist and it has really helped me to better serve my clients since a lot of skincare concerns can be linked to diet.
